Desiderata—
This is one of the most important songs I’ve written, in a sense. I work with children and their lives inspired the idea of this track.
Can’t keep on giving my soul to these b*******
Bitches is a loaded term here. It’s genderless. It’s a vow to myself to stay away from energy vampires and nay-sayers. The “bitch” here is anybody who fits the formerly outlined categories.
“Them kids can’t let no one inside, man
They drunk on the poison of pride, man”
I had just started teaching and I was having trouble genuinely connecting with the kids. As I got to know them more I realized that there were a lot of unaddressed wounds. I changed my flow so I could be a better role model to them and feel worthy of a sort of mentor role. Desiderata is the abbreviated version of the changes I made.
Desiderata means “things desired.” I picked desiderata from the sea of words because it’s beautiful, honestly. It pairs nicely with the energy behind the track as well. There’s a melancholy in the word desiderata; it’s as if the things desired are just out of reach—they are more conceptual than tangible.
