We was so beautiful, now it’s all rotten.
Listen to the story of the Lonely Man
I wrote Lonely Man about a girl I met my first year of college. Lonely Man was the first full song I wrote, before there was IFCKane. This is not to be confused with the songs on Judgement Day, which were all written about someone completely different. Well. Maybe not completely different.
“How did it get like this
Have you forgotten?
We was so beautiful
Now it’s all rotten.
I’m tryna pick ya brain, ooh
Like it’s cotton.
You tryna start some shit,
Why won’t you stop it?”
There’s a purity to the lyrics stemming from a time before I cared what other people thought about my music. This is also the first professional track I recorded with this level of honesty-of-emotion. I’m not screaming in the background because I want a gimmick for the song—that’s genuine pent up feeling.
I’m glad this was the song to receive that sort of artistic treatment. Not to mention, it opened up a heart-to-vocal-cords pathway I didn’t know existed. It paved the way for some of the styling of unreleased tracks y’all will get to hear soon. I’m thankful for all of it and hope you enjoy.
Well. That’s not quite right.
I hope you connect with me.
